Getting the Tiles to the Roof

Unlike the block which was used to build the walls, the ceramic roofing tiles were heavy for their size. So how did we get them to the roof? We hoisted them. You can see the pulley here. One end of the rope had a hook tied to it. That end was wrapped around a stack of tiles and hoisted up to the team in the roof. One person was needed to keep the rope in the pulley as it had a bad habit of jumping its track and jamming. Another person would grab the stack when it reached him and swing the bundle onto a plank to the side. He would then unhook the rope and begin handing the tiles to the others further out to the side to be stacked on more planks. Later, the tiles were placed on the roof in overlapping rows. And if you made a wrong step up here, you dropped almost two stories onto the floor of the sanctuary.
